「ユーグレナ」とは「ミドリムシ」学名で「Euglena」と書かれています。ラテン語で美しい（eu）眼（glena）という意味です。
5億年以上前に原始の地球で誕生した生き物で、人類の大先輩です。1660年代オランダの「微生物学の父」と言われたアントニ・ファン・レーウェンフック氏によって紹介されました。
ミドリムシはべん毛の近くに、光を感じるビューティーな赤い点（眼点）を1つ持っています。このユーグレナの赤い点が美しい瞳に見えたことから。「ユーグレナ（美しい眼）」と名付けられました。

その後、1950年代にアメリカのメルヴィン・カルヴィン氏らが、ユーグレナを用いて光合成の研究を行い、1961年ノーベル化学賞を受賞しています。

1970年代、みどりむしはアメリカ航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）で、宇宙開発の分野でも注目されました。
緑虫が太陽光と二酸化炭素で育つことができることから注目されました。
宇宙空間において、乗務員の呼吸によって排出された二酸化炭素がユーグレナの成長を促し、結果、酸素も得られるというメリットが発見されました。
空気のない宇宙空間においても、みどりむしは活躍しそうですね！宇宙に人類がどんどん進出する未来では、みどりむしはとっても欠かせない存在になっているかもしれませんね！
